Concept & Computer Aided Design

A decade and a half ago, Thornel was one of the first to pioneer the use of computer-aided design (CAD) in warehouse equipment layout. It became apparent that our customers required more than hardware.

CAD equipment allows our sales staff to present a variety of systems designs, which can be examined from different perspectives. CAD flexibility enables us to determine the most efficient use of floor space, manpower and equipment with a quick response to the customer.

The benefits to our customers are immense. It takes the guesswork out of planning and assists the client in focusing on overall objectives when expanding or relocating a facility.

In today's rapidly advancing technology, these designs are easily emailed anywhere around the world.

Project Management

Project management can be included in every Thornel project, some of these responsibilities are:

  • Obtain any necessary building permits when applicable.
  • Visit the site and verify any critical building measurements.
  • Work with CAD operators from concept to installation whenever drawings are required.
  • Review and check CAD drawings for design and accuracy.
  • Determine project bill of materials.
  • Place purchase orders for necessary materials.
  • Freight coordination to ensure timely deliveries.
  • Locate and supervise a insured installation crew.
  • Visit the construction site during installation for a timely project completion.
  • Troubleshoot when unexpected installation obstacles occur.
  • At completion of project, a walk thru at the facility is conducted to verify all punch list items have been finalized.

  • Talk to city to get local codes and determine whether a building permit for our equipment is required.
  • Get a preliminary seismic analysis completed by a seismic engineer for quoting purposes.

What is Valued Managed Relationship

A VMR is a strategic tool wherein a partnership is established with you, the customer, Thornel, and a supplier specializing in a key portion of a customer's business. In today's competitive business environment, there are many examples of VMRs found in a wide range of industries. For example, manufacturers are not only engaging in arm's length transactions with raw material suppliers, but are increasingly involved in joint development of new materials and processes with these suppliers. The manufacturer benefits in terms of advancement in technology and the resulting competitive advantage, lower development costs, and higher quality and lower cost processes.

For most retailers and manufacturers supplying a product, material movement and storage represents a significant portion of operating cost. For these companies, the establishment of a VMR with Thornel and an experienced and reputable material handling supplier is a key ingredient in any Total Cost Management program. In fact, a VMR or similar partnership is often a requirement given the razor-thin operating margins common in some of these industries. Perhaps equally important is the guaranteed outcome in terms of product quality and project success. Few companies can afford to fail on a critical capital project.
A VMR offers:

  • Over 40 years of experience in the design, manufacture, and sale of material handling products.
  • Comprehensive network of engineering and sales personnel for expert pre and post sales support.
  • An internal commitment to value added engineering and service.
  • Competitive pricing: Eliminates the time consuming and expensive bid process.
  • Reduction of day-to-day hassles: Because of the open operating environment, paperwork and time committed to problem solving can be greatly reduced.
  • Product quality: When the right supplier is selected for an alliance, price/quality tradeoffs are eliminated, and the buyer secures the best of both worlds.
  • Problem solving expertise: Who better to solve application problems than the supplier? The VMR affords a special degree of attention.
Implementation assistance: Project management support is a common provision in VMR agreements.
  • Product availability: VMR customers receive priority manufacturing status.
  • Access to new technologies: Innovative suppliers look to VMR customers for field trials of new solutions. This provides significant competitive advantage.
